Hondo Public Library (HPL) is always seeking ways to improve service to our members and the citizens of Hondo and the surrounding Medina County area. Below is a listing of our most recent additions in programs and services, many of which were funded through grants thereby saving our City and its citizens money.
Laptops and Wi-Fi hotspots are available for patrons to check-out; for patrons without a device or internet access from home, this program allows them to: 1) work from home, 2) attend school from home, 3) access government entities, such as Social Security, the Veterans Administration, Texas Department of Health and Human Services and others, to apply for benefits or update their existing case, 4) do job searches and complete online applications, 5) prepare resumes and other documents, and anything else that can be done online. The laptops and Wi-Fi hotspots were purchased with a grant from the Hancher Foundation.
A $2,500 Collection Enhancement grant from the Texas Book Festival added new, updated, and diverse materials to our Young Adult collection. HPL will consider these new materials when planning programming for our teen and tween patrons.
The Texas State Libraries and Archives Commission (TSLAC) provided a $400 grant for the REFORMA Virtual Conference. REFORMA is the National Association to Promote Library and Information Services to Latinos and the Spanish Speaking. This grant will allow a Spanish-speaking staff member both membership in REFORMA and the opportunity to attend this Virtual Conference.
The American Library Association (ALA) in partnership with the National Center for Interactive Learning (NCIL) at the Space Science Institute (SSI), Twin Cities PBS, Institute for Learning Innovation (ILI), and Education Development Center (EDC) awarded HPL an ALA STAR Net STEAM Equity award; HPL is one of only twelve libraries across the US to receive one of these awards. The award will cover 2021-2024 and reimburse up to $15,000 to bring programs, exhibitions, and the addition of STEAM kits. This award is designed to help reach tweens (ages 10-13) and their families learn about STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) and careers in these fields by exploring how STEAM impacts daily life. One goal of the program is to increase future entrants into STEAM career fields, especially among Latina/o’s who are currently underrepresented in those fields.
HPL will continue to seek to fulfill our mission to bring programs and services to all the citizens of Hondo and the surrounding area. Help us with this by making suggestions for items to add to the collection, programs of interest, and any other ideas for improvement.
