South Texas Training Center

front view strtc

In 2011, after over four years of a persistent effort by the City of Hondo, its Mayor and Management Staff, the South Texas Regional Training Center was opened on Hondo’s Airbase to serve the vocational and academic individual needs of Hondo, Medina County and the surrounding area.  The facility is operative under an Interlocal Agreement between the City of Hondo, Medina County, Southwest Texas Junior College in Uvalde, Alamo Colleges in San Antonio, and Texas State Technical College in Harlingen.

Funding to renovate the existing structure was provided by the City of Hondo Economic Development Corporation ($1,000,000) and the Commissioner’s Court of Medina County ($300,000) and the un-renovated building and the land on which the building is situated were provided by the City of Hondo.

The training center opened in August 2011, with on-site and distance learning academic classes along with pre-college remedial courses offered by the Uvalde College.  Plans are to continue to offer the academic courses but to broaden the offerings to include vocational/technical trade courses like truck driving, welding, air-conditioning installation/repair, plumbing, electrical, medical training and many more.

Some of the funding for these job-related courses will be provided by Alamo Workforce-San Antonio.

Prospective students should contact Southwest Texas Junior College personnel at the training center located at 402 Carter in Hondo, Texas.
